Michelle Palmer Lee and Harriett Karuhije

Michelle Palmer Lee and Harriett Karuhije are the principle characters in Otis Lee’s “The Last Train from Djibouti”.

Rooted in the authentic experiences of Dr. Michelle Palmer Lee and her mentor, Dr. Harriett F. Karuhije, “The Last Train From Djibouti” chronicles the transformative odyssey of two women as they embark on separate voyages to their ancestral homeland, Africa. Their determination to rediscover Africa and, in the process, themselves, leads them to unexpected revelations. As these women grapple with profound questions concerning identity and character, a broader narrative unfolds, portraying the essence of an “unrequited return.” Interweaving excerpts from Michelle’s journal, Harriett’s keen observations, and Otis’s own blend of research and personal experience, the narrative paints a microcosm of the African-American struggle to unearth their roots in a culture that was disrupted, transported across seas, and transformed into something new.
